Food Affecting Your Mood
This is an article I came across that I thought I should share……………….Enjoy, Dr Andy
Food additives and poor diet could help explain poor school performance, criminal behavior, alcoholism, and the growing numbers of Alzheimer’s patients.
According to Dr. Russell Blaylock, high sugar content and starchy carbohydrates lead to excessive insulin release, which in turn leads to falling blood sugar levels, or hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia causes the brain to secrete glutamate in levels that can cause agitation, depression, anger, anxiety, panic attacks and an increase in suicide risk.
The glutamate that causes this is identical to the flavor-enhancing monosodium glutamate (MSG) and its chemical cousins, which are found in thousands of food products, further exacerbating the problem.
Repeated hypoglycemic episodes increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s). In children, hypoglycemia often leads to hyperactivity. In both children and adults, it can cause violent and aggressive behavior. In older people, there can be mental confusion.
An anti-hypoglycemic diet would consist of lean meat and lots of fresh vegetables. Another key is limiting sugars and starches.
DOCTOR’S NOTE
This is something that I have referenced to many of my patients after a thorough consultation regarding their diet. Too many people eat processed, starchy or sugary foods. Not only does this change your mood, it also affects the cells of your body. When you eat these foods they start the body into an inflammatory cycle whereas, the tissues of the body start to show signs of redness, pain, and swelling. By leaving your body in this state, you set yourself up for numerous chronic diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, muscle pain, aches, and diabetes to name a few.
The way to counteract this is by starting on an anti-inflammatory diet with proper organic foods and supplementation. Stay tuned for more information on this.
Thank you Dr. Fetterman,
This is an often overlooked problem. Most people do not realize just how many chemicals they are ingesting in a single slice of white bread or a piece of pizza.
MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate) is well known to cause problems, but many foods contain “glutamate” in other forms or in combination with other additives and re-named something else. So just because a package says “No MSG” that doesn’t mean you aren’t eating it.
Children are particularly susceptible to these toxic chemicals as their brains are still growing and maturing. Some experts have found a link between ADD/ADHD and food additives.
A book I recommend on this topic is “Excitotoxins.” It tells the story of these additives and teaches consumers what to look for. I found this book while at a conference on Brain Trauma. Just look it up on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. (I have no $$ itnerest in this book, I use it and recommend it to my patients)
Again, thanks for alerting the public on this important health issue Dr. Fetterman.
So many of us just carelessly ingest anything we come across. I wish I lived on a farm where I grew my own food. That seems to be the only place where I might be safe.
